๐Ÿ”ง Aircon Servicing
Every three months if you use it daily, more often if it runs most of the day, and no more than six months apart for light use. Here is the schedule, and why it matters.

City Cooling Pte Ltd recommends servicing a home aircon every three months if you run it every day, more often if it runs for most of the day, and no more than six months apart if you only switch it on now and then. Daikin Singapore and Mitsubishi Electric Singapore both recommend quarterly servicing for everyday use.

The table below sets out the schedule by daily use. The rest of this guide covers when to service more often, deep cleaning, new units, warranty and what you can safely do between visits.

How often to service aircon in Singapore, by daily use

For an aircon that runs every day, book a general service every three months. If it runs for most of the day, service it every two to three months. If it is only used now and then, such as in a guest room or study, service it at least every six months. How many hours a day the unit runs sets the pace, not its age.

How you use the unitHow often to service it
Over 8 hours a day (a home office, a living room unit running most of the day, a bedroom unit used day and night)Every 2 to 3 months
Every day, a few hours at a time (including a bedroom unit used most nights)Every 3 months
Now and then (guest room, study)Every 3 to 6 months, and no longer than 6 months

This follows manufacturer guidance. Daikin Singapore recommends quarterly servicing if the unit is used every day, and Mitsubishi Electric Singapore recommends regular servicing on a quarterly basis. Offices, shops and F&B outlets run longer hours and need their own schedule; see commercial aircon servicing. For servicing prices by flat type, see our HDB aircon servicing guide.

When should you service more often?

Move towards the shorter interval if you have pets that shed, the unit is near the kitchen, there has been renovation work in or near your home, there is haze, or your home faces a busy main road. Each of these clogs the filter and coil with dust or grease faster than normal.

Is servicing once a year enough in Singapore?

For an aircon used every day, no. Once-a-year advice is common online, but it is written for places where an aircon sits unused for months at a time. In Singapore, units run all year in humid air, so the coil inside stays damp, collects dust and grows slime within months. That is why manufacturers in Singapore recommend quarterly servicing for daily use.

A unit that is rarely switched on can go longer, but City Cooling Pte Ltd still recommends no more than six months between services, because dust and moisture keep building up inside the unit even when it is idle.

How often do you need a chemical wash or chemical overhaul?

A chemical wash or chemical overhaul does not run on a fixed calendar like general servicing. Book one when general servicing no longer keeps the unit clean: a musty smell that returns soon after a service, cooling that stays weak with clean filters, ice on the coil, or water leaking from the indoor unit. Daikin Singapore, for example, advises chemical cleaning when the cooling drops or the coil ices up.

A chemical wash cleans the coil and drain tray with the unit partly dismantled. A chemical overhaul takes the indoor unit apart completely. Our guide to chemical wash versus chemical overhaul explains which one you need, and our aircon chemical overhaul page covers the service itself. The outdoor unit needs care too; see aircon condenser cleaning.

When should a new aircon get its first service?

Count from the installation date and follow the same schedule. For a new aircon used every day, that means its first general service around three months after it is installed. Check the manual as well, since some models carry their own guidance. If you are still choosing a system, see aircon installation.

What does regular servicing do for your aircon?

Regular servicing keeps air moving through a clean filter and coil, keeps the drain clear so water does not leak, and lets a technician spot worn parts before they fail. A general service at City Cooling Pte Ltd covers filter and coil cleaning, drain pipe clearing, a gas level check and electrical testing, and takes about 30 to 45 minutes per unit. These are the three main benefits.

Benefit 1

Cleaner Air and Fewer Smells

An aircon pulls room air across its filter and cooling coil all day. In Singapore’s humidity the coil stays damp, so dust that gets past the filter sticks to it, and mould and slime can grow on the coil and in the drain tray. That build-up is what causes musty smells and black spots on the vents.

Servicing cleans the filter, coil and drain before the build-up takes hold. If a smell has already set in, see the signs your aircon needs servicing.

Benefit 2

Lower Electricity Use

A clogged filter and a dirty coil restrict airflow, so the compressor has to run longer to bring the room to the same temperature, and that uses more electricity.

Regularย aircon serviceย keeps the filter and coil clean, so the unit reaches the set temperature with less effort. For other ways to cut running costs, see our guide to saving on your aircon electricity bill.

Benefit 3

Fewer Breakdowns and a Longer Working Life

During a service, the technician checks the drain, gas level and electrical parts, so small problems such as a blocked drain or a loose part are caught before they turn into a repair. Mitsubishi Electric Singapore states that the life span will be shortened if the unit is not serviced periodically.

Regularย aircon servicing in Singaporeย is a running cost to plan for, separate from your warranty.

Is aircon servicing covered by your warranty?

No. Daikin Singapore and Mitsubishi Electric Singapore both state that general servicing is not covered during the warranty period and is charged separately, and Mitsubishi Electric advises engaging a qualified contractor for it. Check your own warranty card for any conditions that apply to your model.

What can you do yourself between services?

Switch the aircon off at the isolator before you touch it. Refrigerant, wiring, the inside of the unit and anything on the HDB aircon ledge are for a technician only. What you can safely do is clean the filters and wipe the vents and front panel with a damp cloth. City Cooling Pte Ltd recommends cleaning the filters every two to three weeks if you run the aircon daily; our guide on how to clean your aircon filter shows how.

Is a servicing contract worth it if you service every three months?

If you service three or four times a year, a contract saves you booking each visit separately, keeps the schedule on track and usually costs less per visit. It suits homes with several units that run daily. Book ahead of the hottest months so your units are clean when you need them most. See our aircon servicing contract options and the full price list.

Which signs mean you should not wait for the next service?

Water dripping from the indoor unit, a musty smell, weak or warm air, new noises or a rising electricity bill all mean a service is due now, whatever the calendar says. The 7 signs your aircon needs servicing explains what each one means. If you notice a burning smell, sparking or a breaker that keeps tripping, switch the aircon off at the isolator and call a technician.

If cooling stays weak after a service, the unit may be low on refrigerant; see aircon gas refill.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How often should I service my aircon if I only use it at night?

A bedroom aircon that runs most nights counts as daily use, so service it every three months. If it also runs during the day, for example in a home office, move to every two to three months.

Is it worth servicing an aircon that is still cooling well?

Yes. Dust and slime build up on the coil and in the drain before cooling drops, so by the time you notice a difference the unit has usually been working harder for a while. Regular servicing clears the build-up before it causes leaks or smells.

How long does aircon servicing take?

A general service takes about 30 to 45 minutes per unit. A chemical wash or overhaul takes longer, because the unit is partly or fully taken apart.

Do I need a gas top-up at every service?

No. A top-up is only needed when the refrigerant is low, and the technician checks the gas level during a general service. If a unit keeps running low, it has a leak that needs fixing first.

Is aircon servicing covered by my warranty?

No. Daikin Singapore and Mitsubishi Electric Singapore both state that general servicing is not covered during the warranty period and is charged separately.
